According to the trusty C4 teletext service (pg 161) Michael Stipe admitted he stole Morrissey's stage moves. During his warm up date for Glastonbury at the Brixton Academy he told the crowd 'I saw Morrissey pass his hands over the crowd and thought, Ooh that looks good, Im stealing that and I did'

He later went onto change the lyrics in 'Man on the Moon' from 'Mr Fred Blassie' to 'Mr Steven Morrissey'

Apparently he went and watched the Smiths on the Meat Is Murder tour!!

Hopefully he'll say something about the great man at Glastonbury as I'm going!!

REM pay tribute to London at Brixton Academy show - NME.com, June 25, 2003. Excerpt:

REM paid tribute to LONDON at their BRIXTON ACADEMY show last night (June 24) by playing a host of the songs from 'FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION', the 1985 album they recorded in the UK capital.

The band, playing the first of two sold-out nights, performed the first four songs on the album in order. Frontman Michael Stipe told the ecstatic crowd: "We recorded this album in London, so it's very special to be playing these songs here tonight."

Stipe, who was in exuberant form, also told the crowd he had seen The Smiths play the 4,500 venue in 1985 and had stolen his stage moves from Morrissey after seeing him onstage that night.

  • They've been admirers of each other for a long time. I recall in an old article I have lying around here somewhere ol' Moz saying, "I'd defend Michael Stipe any day as he's defended me in the past" or something to that affect. Anyway, I've always loved REM. I'm glad to see that Moz has inspired some of my most favourite artists!

I seem to remember during a live radio broadcast years ago a fan called in and asked Morrissey what his favorite REM song was - to which Morrissey kind of chuckled and simply said "none".

I know this has nothing to do with whatever relationship Stipe & Moz share, just thought some of you young whippersnappers would be interested in this pointless trivia.

  • Michael Stipe has followed Morrissey on most everything that he has done. I have never thought much of this guy. Why all the hoopla over REM? I bought "Fables" and tossed it almost immediately. What Crap! And don't explain to me that obviously I'm in a minority camp because they have sold a billion records; Bruce Springsteen has and his music is a black eye on the American Music Scene. Stipe would have been more interesting as an Atlanta Airport RentBoy.

  • So many things to hate about Stipe:

    - whiny and self-obsessed
    - tries as much as possible to influence local politics in his hometown of Athens, GA, with his decidedly liberal utopian ideas, despite the fact that he has no conceivable idea about the requirements and politics of managing a city
    - fawns over Morrissey instead of trying to be equal or superior to Morrissey
    - His songs (and i mean this) SUCK!
    - is a friend of Courtney Love (if you can dig Courtney, I can't dig you)
    - claims the Beatles were not really an "important" band and that they have had no influence on REM's music. (those of you who listen to REM know that such a claim is preposterous; almost ALL of REM's melodic structures were preceded decades earlier by the Beatles)
    - other reasons ad nauseum

Just wanted to set the record straight.

  • When I saw REM perform at the MEN Arena back in 1999. I recall telling my girlfriend that Michael Stipe’s bodily performance on stage was similar to that of Morrissey’s. At the time I wondered whose copied whom? Now that my mind is at rest, I can turn to my girlfriend with great pride and say that I was right. Both Morrissey and Michael Stipe are great artists.
