The Big Issue features a two-page spread on the Morrissey. It gives a brief rundown of his history and talks about the upcoming documentary and new compilation album.

In last week's Big Issue magazine they featured a glowing 1 page review of 'Under the Influence'. I believe the pic to go with the article was a new LA shot - Moz sat with shades in front of a slot machine.

Also, in a trailer for the next issue, Moz is the lead feature (sounds like it could even be an interview) so expect a possible cover. This issue comes out in most regions on the 2nd June 2003.

  • I've read the feature myself and still can't make out whether it's an interview or not. It's almost like someone did a telephone interview - I don't suppose the Big Issue had a budget to send a reporter to LA! There's none of the "I met the softly spoken Mancunian in LosAngeles' Cat and Fiddle - how handsome he is, blah blah blah". It doesseemto have some new Morrissey quotes though about the New York Dolls.

It's wonderful though to see scary people holding up Morrissey's picture with the 'MORRISSEY' caption outside the railway stations in London. Morrissey knows this is the best form of advertising- in yer face! And he is a love for letting the Big Issue have this 'interview' rather than the boring old Observer or whatever.

    • Hello,
I wrote the Morrissey piece from the transcripts of the three interviews which made up the documentary - anything that didn't appear in the documentary was fair game. And yes, you are right, there wasn't enough money to send me to LA - but even if there had, Morrissey doesn't seem to like face to face interviews these days ...
You can buy the London edition of the Big Issue (which ran the piece) through the bigissue.com site.

  • I can't believe it- every mag in Britain has the guy on the cover.
You're not gonna believe this, but even today's 'TV Quick' magazine(cheesy listings mag) features an interview with him; will send in the scans tomorrow.

  • He's the arts editor, and looking back, the 2003 piece isn't much different from the 1999 one

  • I say, is that an Englishman with Irish blood, an English heart and a Mancunian liver?

The B.I quotes seem to be re-cycled from the big WORD interview, it's as if to standard questions only scripted answers will be proffered. Who is interviewing whom here? Morrissey is saying CREATE THE QUESTIONS to the answers I'm going to give you!

    a) The "most English of Englishmen" comment has appeared in at least three articles I've read recently.

b)"I've never had a Manchester accent. I thank God for that daily." (He must stress how little he has in common with Mike Joyce - accent is a good place to start. Again denial of a Mancunian lilt has appeared in recent interviews.)

    Clark Gable's house....blah blah blah.

    New York dolls...blah blah blah.

    Ceylon tea...blah blah blah.

PETA...blah blah (note: focusing attention on cruelty to animals, takes the spotlight off of human suffering and the guilt that goes with being a greedy millionaire!)

BUT there is an intriguing paragraph in The Big Issue article;- he was interrogated by Special Branch in 1988 over allegations that he was involved in the Brighton bombing because of 'Margaret On The Guillotine' - how scary is that?

Roll on Sunday 11:15pm Channel 4 - only then can some of us see if this high profile media campaign is worth all the attention we're giving these magazine articles.

  • Is it just to tie in with the 'Under the Influence' sleeve?, but why when the article gives it but a passing mention. Is it that these were the only photos they could get their hands on? Or is it because Morrissey looked better aged 36 than he does now at 44? Well I liked the photos of Moz in Word magazine. And Morrissey seemed to have left it to the Word what they printed about him and presumably he therefore didn't insist the Big Issue use old photos for the sake of his vanity. I just don't know. I'm not complaining.

  • Hey Ya'll,
I was so happy to see morrissey on the cover of the big issue that i made two homeless men very happy by buying every issue they had at 930 AM on my way to work. I know they throw away the copies when they havent been sold so i figured, hey its for a good cause and well the rest is history. But If you want a copy, let me know and I'll send you one. They are £1.20 (approx $1.90 US)
and postage is about £2.00 (roughly $3.00 US)So if you want a copy let me know and I'll send it on its way. Just email me at [email protected] and I'll tell you let you know the rest. In the subject portion please write 'Big Issue Morrissey.' My email filter is a nazi.
    xx Carla
