There's a short (one page) piece in the latest Time Out (London edition) this week. It is basically Christopher Eccleston's (English actor, in "The Others") story of how and why he loves the Smiths and Morrissey. He's the narrator of the documentary to be shown on UK Channel Four in the next week or so. At one point he comments that no way is Morrissey racist, and that his voice at the moment is "better than ever". Update: 06/04 05:10 GMT: scan of Time Out article posted on the general discussion board by Benton. --- Steve M also writes: The current issue of London listings mag Time Out has an interview with Christopher Eccleston, the Manc actor narrating the forthcoming documentary, which is announced as being screened on June 8th on Channel 4 in the UK. --- Loves Young Dream writes: The Importance Of Being Morrissey Just got this from C4... THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING MORRISSEY Transmission: Channel 4, Sunday June 8th, 11.15pm. Steven Patrick Morrissey, the charismatic but enigmatic former singer of The Smiths, gives his first television interview for 16 years in this intimate and revealing documentary. For a period of six months Morrissey allowed cameras to follow him on tour, at home and at large. This documentary gives an insight into the man whose mysterious nature has led to all kinds of myths: that he is celibate, eccentric, a manic depressive – even racist. Here he addresses these questions directly for the very first time, and also talks frankly about his relationship with former members of The Smiths, his aversion to the telephone and isolation from the music industry. Despite a highly successful world tour in 2003, Morrissey is currently without a record deal – a situation that is regarded as a shameful negligence by his passionate legion of admirers. The Smiths were rated most influential group of all time by the NME in 2001. Between 1984 and 1987, and over the course of four astonishing albums and several must-have compilations, The Smiths dominated the ‘indie’ scene but the band’s scope and influence also penetrated the mainstream, leaving a lasting influence on music. The combination of guitarist Johnny Marr’s shimmering, beautifully melodic compositions and Morrissey’s bleakly humorous lyrics carved The Smiths a unique niche. When Marr moved on, Morrissey launched a highly successful solo career. The adulation of his fans, particularly in the live arena, became legendary. In 1988, Morrissey moved to Los Angeles, a move that surprised almost everyone. The singer seemed to embody a certain insular Englishness totally alien to a Californian lifestyle. And yet Morrissey, a man who still very much craves his own privacy and company, has managed to maintain his isolated existence while also discovering a legion of new admirers among Hispanic fans. This exclusive portrait also features some of Morrissey’s fans and friends, including Chrissie Hynde, Will Self, Nancy Sinatra, Noel Gallagher, Kathy Burke, JK Rowling, Alan Bennett, Sparks, Miranda Sawyer, Bono and Michael Bracewell, all offering their insights into a true original of popular music. Morrissey, now aged 43, has lost none of the trade mark wit, self-deprecation and abrasive comment that always made his interview copy priceless. Among the programme’s gems are: Before hitting the stage at the Royal Albert Hall; “I smell assassination… gunpowder.” On his former band; "The Smiths was incredibly personal to me – like launching your own diary to music." On vegetarianism; "I really feel quite smug about mad cow disease and think ‘well, what did you expect’?" And on his appearance; "Why meddle with a masterpiece?" The cast of talking heads is a little disconcerting. I doubt Gallagher's insight will extend beyond "f-in' top lyrics, man, laughed my tits off" and Bono's opinions on anything are never more than smug homespun philosophies masquerading as poetic wisdom. Still at least there's no sign of Kate Thornton or Balding Theakston.
