BBC 6 Music aired the 1994 documentary 'Smiths at the Beeb' on Monday night, as part of the station's Smiths week. Interestingly, I found out for the first time that 2 BBC versions of "Reel Around The Fountain" exist.

The original version was recorded in May '83 for a John Peel session and can be found on Hatful of Hollow. It was recorded again for the David Jensen Show in September '83, but was not aired due to The Sun's paedophile story nonsense. The version used in the documentary was the un-broadcast version.

  • Don't think anyone will post a response to this story; From my experience most users of this site are more interested in discussing Morrissey's cat than than learning about important things, I.E. the music.

I heard the 'Smiths at the Beeb' doc last night, this Smiths week has been great so far.

It's a shame all this crap happened this week. I heard and taped both documentaries. They were fascinating. An early Morrissey interview I'd never heard and loads of the session tracks. Was fantastique.
Yesterday on live radio Geoff Travis was virtually inviting Morrissey to come back to come back to Rough Trade if he wanted. It was all readily listenable to.
The Salford Lads Club thing on Friday should be....interesting!

  • I always loved loved loved Moz's Smiths-voice. It sounds so innocent somehow...

  • I'm listening to BBC6 almost everyday and it's just a fantastic station: the music is brilliant and the DJ's really know what there talking about ... don't think it's that popular though (but who cares)
