From Channel 4's (UK) Planet Sound teletext pages:

PAINTING A VULGAR PICTURE

Johnny Marr has attacked WEA over their handling of The Smiths’ back catalogue.

“They’re a bunch of barrow boys,” Marr told PS. “I can’t say how much it upsets me that they own the rights to The Smiths’ work until we die.”

Marr added that he and Morrissey had approached WEA with reissue ideas. “They didn’t reply,” he said. “I’ve given up offering. They’re too busy misspelling song titles to show any courtesy to the band.”

On an occasion of this kind it becomes more than a moral duty to speak one's mind. It becomes a pleasure. -O.W.
  • Dear Friends,

WOW! I know the music industry is terribly awful- but exactly what kind of recording contract did Morrissey and Marr sign ANYWAYS-?

I think that Morrissey & Marr should have a great deal to say with regard to their catalog, but apparently they don't!!!

Was that part of the entire contract? I also understand that the contracts did NOT recognize Joyce and Roarke whatsoever.

I think that the reissue of The Very Best of the Smiths was superb in sound quality (but I am not too keen on audio technology). I felt the cover was simply awful!!! And they chopped off about one-half of "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me."

Listening to that CD is a guilty pleasure!

    What can be done?
Is their a CD singles box set in the works?

It is a very mixed blessing to be brought back from the dead.
  • Wouldn't it be nice to have some of the unreleased stuff properly packaged with sleve notes. Like say the Troy Tate sessions that everyone has a poorly recorded tape of. Or the other bits & pieces that we know about but cannot get for love or money. Something along the lines of the Beatles' Anthology. Maybe the way WEA have treated what they do have has put paid to this idea.

  • I'm looking at buying a DVD player and I was down at my local HMV to see what DVD's are available. I was amazed to see The Complete Picture on DVD without any extra's, I thought thats what DVD's are all about, surely theres enough footage about to fill a DVD.
All of The Smiths best of/most of's have been disapointing, I've never felt the need to buy something that I've already got.
EMI got it right by releasing Viva Hate with the bonus tracks and the CD single box sets but I believe WEA just don't have the imagination but that's the Yanks for you.
I've heard through the grapevine that the full "Rank" concert may be broadcast this summer on the BBC.

  • ...that's what you get. M+M didn't have to sell, it was an easy way to get, what $30 million? I'm no lawyer, but something tells me they could have negotiated for some artistic control when selling to WEA.
