On the 19th of February 2003 Erlend Øye, a member of the Kings Of Convenience, and his band played some Smiths tunes live at the concert at Hop & Grape in Manchester . If I remember correctly there was bits of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want' and some other song from the 'Queen Is Dead' album that I can't remember the title of...

I noticed that the crowd didn't pick up on the Smiths references. It was pretty bizarre considering the fact that the Smiths are one of the most famous and greatest bands to come out of Manchester.

  • A group of friends of mine recently went to see The Ataris at manchester academy and apparently suring the show they played a tribute to "a legend". Unfortunately they can't remember the name of the song they played!

a long time ago when i was still in the midst of a devastating breakup, i emailed erlend through the kings of convenience website. the band was due to play in los angeles and so i commented on that, but more importantly i mentioned how their song "winning a battle, losing the war" would be the first track on a cd for my ex-boyfriend if i ever decided to send it. this was his response:

And as #2 may I suggest
"there is a light that never goes out"
    by the Smiths.

It would make me think twice.
