Bay Area pop band Belle Da Gama have made their cover of "Shoplifters of the World Unite" available for download as part of their new "internet single" series. The single, and accompanying artwork, can be downloaded at www.belledagama.com.

Belle Da Gama have a long history of performing Smiths and Morrissey songs, and will probably be performing "Shoplifters..." at their upcoming shows with fellow Smiths/Morrissey loving band, Statuesque.

  • Sounds like the Brady Kids covering a Smith Tune. Leave well enough alone. You want to cover something that needs help? Try tackling Kill Uncle; the production on that Album can only be improved.

  • After hearing this cover I'm strongly for starting a petition for an international prohibition against Smiths/Morrissey-covers. All unauthorized violators of this prohibition would face the penalty of having to listen through the entire Mötley Crüe 90's discography for 5 weeks in a row without pause.

Authorizations for recording or public performance of Moz/Smiths-covers would be applied from a learned council of Moz/Smiths-specialists.

In the case of a recorded cover the recording process would be followed closely and on first notice of anything like Belle Da Gama the project would be halted immediately, the tapes destroyed thoroughly and the guilty parties punished without mercy.

In the case of a live performance the rehearsals for the songs would be attended for the last 3 weeks before the intended performance date with the authority to cancel the performance at any time and give the performers a proper caning. At performance a representative of the council would be given access to the main power switch and an authorization to cut power and punish all guilty parties if things get ugly (or to use a proper term "belledagama-y"). The council would also be in charge of directing all audience members and technical staff to proper rehabilitation therapy.

    Anyone for say "I".

  • Our Response! (Score:2, Informative)

Yikes, such negative responses! I hope you all aren't taking our cover too seriously. We certainly wanted to do it justice, but we were having fun with it, too. We wanted to try and make a kind of "power pop" version of it--rock it up a little and give it a little glam rock swagger. Maybe even how a Southpaw/Majadjusted era Moz-band might have done it! There's supposed to be a bit of wink involved--we love The Smiths and wanted to flip the song around a tad and see what happened in a fun and slightly over-the-top way. We even inserted a bit of the Wynona Rider shoplifting trial tape into the instrumental break.
Really it's all in fun--a loving tribute and not an attempt to replace the original or anything!

I know how it is to hear a beloved song changed around and given a new face, but I also enjoy hearing the different ways in which the same pieces can be used to make new pictures. Perhaps if you listen to it in that spirit, it won't seem quite so awful!

    best,
    Bradley
