X-clusive: Morrissey Caught 'Under the Influence'

DMC, the record company behind the renowned 'Back to Mine', celebrity compilation album series has announced a new collection of release assembled by some of music’s biggest stars – first up, Morrissey.

In the past DMC’s 'Back to Mine' asked famous musicians to collect their favourite ‘after the pubs shut’ albums from their own record collections. Previous releases have included albums amassed by such luminaries as Death In Vegas, The Orb, Faithless, Talvin Singh and New Order amongst others.

DMC’s latest venture entitled 'Under The Influence' plans on drawing on the tracks that inspired some of the world's greatest recording artists and Xfm Online can reveal the first person to sign up is legendary (and famously reclusive) Smiths front man Morrissey.

Mozzer will be laying down the first collection due for release in May of this year. Although his collection of songs are still being licensed expect offerings from the likes of The New York Dolls, Diana Dors, Patti Smith and The Ramones.

In July, another musical guru will be unleashing their favourite tracks as ex-Stone Roses singer Ian Brown collates his big hitters.

Keeping checking www.xfm.co.uk for more track details for both albums.

I Like You - Moz talks about influences on new TV show
10.feb.03

Morrissey is the first artist to be featured in a new show called "Under the Influence", which explores the record collections of great recording artists.

The company, who also made "Back to Mine", a kind of Dance Music 'Through the Keyhole', will be unleashing this new show on us at the end of May. The tracks are still being licensed so we have no idea yet what the former Smiths man picked. Any ideas?

Some New York Dolls? Ramones? Sandie Shaw? Cilla Black?

Moz only knows.

  • The Back to Mine collections are very interesting and gives you a view in to the artists own musical collection/favourites. The Orb collection was brilliant and was not dance music oriented as one would think.
Sure Morrissey will include some of his own well known influences(Dolls, Nico, etc.), but be prepared for a bit of obscurity. Should be great.
In fact he might even release one of his new tracks on the disc. Other Back to Mine artists gave exclusive unreleased tracks to thier compilations.

  • Oh I think this could be interesting! He made me discover such great bands as the monochromse Set etc. .....I'm not always sure of his taste in music, but hey, we all have "bodys in our cellars" as we say here...

I know how...The anonymous person is the man himself. Hey you forgot to add that you requested an advance of £10,000 of the royalties to be donated to PETA…aww! I know for a fact that Moz is on MSOLO. He was on here at 4:15 pm last Friday weren’t you? And you took particular interest in the “Phonographic Performance Ltd owes Moz money” topic…Interesting! But thank you for keeping us informed.

  • This sounds absolutely fantastic! Wow! this almost makes up for the TATU-scare I had just then. This will be an astonishing album I think. Sandie Shaw with Nico, Velvet Underground with the Supremes...Maybe he'll even put on Jobriath. I've never heard him before, but I'm fascinated with him.
I HAVE noticed over the years that Moz's taste in music is a lot like mine. Probably half of my record collection I owe to him. I have the same taste in books as well.
I can't wait! I mean, it's sort of a new album really, isn't it? Extatic!

I’d like to extend my sincerest apologies to the gentleman who sent me the disheartened email last night.

Please know my intentions were completely innocent and I meant no trouble nor was I tying to invade your space or violate your privacy. Please understand that I was just overwhelmed with excitement and wanted to share what I had learned. Please accept this apology for my childish and disgraceful actions. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. I swear on the blessed mother of god this will never ever happen again. I feel terribly shameful for causing such angst, as the last thing in the world I want is to be on your shit list.

  • We already know a lot about his musical taste. Will there be any surprises is what I wonder? Bowie, T-Rex, NY Dolls, Patti Smith, Ramones, Cockney Rejects, The Business, X-Ray-Spex, Klaus Nomi, Angelic Upstarts, TV Personalities, The Sparks, The Thrills, Echobelly, Suede, Ludus, Gen X, Velvet Underground/Nico, Hank Snow, Siouxsie, Apex Theory, Smoking Popes, Shirley Bassey, Timi Yuro, Sinatra, Pony Club, Phranc, Gallon Drunk, King Cheetah, Sack, etc..... What else am I forgetting? Hopefully, it will be some more obscure stuff, rather than the usual intro-tape fare, and well kown acts. I'd like to see Moz getting into some Tex Ritter, or Snow Patrol or something.

  • I've always been interested in whether or not Moz speaks French and whether he's ever really had an interest in the French Crooners (and Croonettes) like Aznavour, Montand, Piaf, Dalida, Lama, etc and this whole thing about the apparent communication between him and Lady Morrissey is very intriguing. I mean...Moz surfing the net?
