A previously unbroadcast Morrissey performance ("Roy's Keen", performed 5.9.97) will be shown on TOTP2 on Wednesday 5th February, on BBC2 at 6.20pm.

TOTP2 lineup, Feb. 5 - Morrissey

This is the first ever showing of this performance, so forgive us for being a touch excited. Also, for those who don't appeciate ol' Mozza, look away as we embark on a glittering, near-sycophantic ramble about Manchester's finest.

'Roy's Keen' isn't a tribute to Irelands's most mentalist footballer, but an over-eager window cleaner. A far cry from the overly-direct 'Thatcher On The Guillotine' it may be, but this song is brimming with Morrissey's charm and skill with a tune.

'Roy's Keen' failed to reach the Top 40. Alas, the masses were too ensconsed with the Spice Girls to bother raising the manc misery from No.42. Shame.

  • mmm if u were at the olympia show in Dublin a few years ago when moz put on a republic of Ireland jersey, singing the song, you would know its about roy.

Bye the way.he is one of Irelands greatest footballers. If anyone is a mentalist,it was the dreaded mick mccarthy, who booted him out of the world cup.Thank god we have a decent manager in charge now...

  • sory, but how anyone can think this is a good tune is beyond me. it's turd - plain and simple. the only highlight is that it's never been seen before. i'd count that as a blessing..... awful song - truly dire

  • from the Stray Cats was a nice bonus, and woth
the 10 minutes waiting, seeing Morrissey and the
    Lads performing Roy's Keen [live?]
Morrissey wearing light grey shirt and grey
    pants.
A bummer that it was cut [only 2 minutes, not
the whole performance],and IMHO Johny Bridgewood
    on badd instead of Gary.

  • Well, seeing Moz in '97 again, it is now very clear he has put on a few pounds. Good performance though.

  • Ha Morrissey and Sam Fox next to each other billing wise. Steve Wright should still be hung. After some doubts having just seen TOTP2 Im immensely glad that song won out to be shown against the continually reshown Smiths stuff. With Maladjusted just about the only album I don't own I haven't heard Roy's Keen that much but as a newcomer I liked that performance, song, tune and all. Then again my favourite song in Morrissey's solo cat is 'Piccadilly Palare' and that I find isn't a widely common choice.

See all you Star and Garter lot on Friday.
    Love to you allxx

  • Just watched the performance on TOTP2. At the end that smug arsehole Steve Wright had the following to say;

"Well, as you can see, by 1997 he'd filled out a bit. Didn't seem quite so depressed. And that tree growing out of his bum had obviously bloomed and died again."

As per, Moz looked and sounded superb. Steve Wright should have been hung when Moz first suggested it!

  • Thought that was a solid performance, looked good, sounded good - what is there to bitch about?? Shame it was juxtaposed between those two good awful records, Olivia Newton John and Sam Fox (the day-glo eighties identi-kit Melinda Messenger).

Dont think it'll be the last we see of ol' Moz on TV this year either.

  • looking pretty good. Alain looked especially young. The music and vocals were both live as it sounded quite different to the recorded version.
Couldn't help feeling sad about the whole thing tho. There was Moz giving it his all thinking he'd be performing to 5 million on Friday night prime-time telly only for the song to fail to chart. Would be a real shame if that was his last ever TOTP.
Roy's Keen isn't awful. It shouldn't have been a single though. Just an average album track. Quite ironic, however, that the B-side 'Lost' is one of the most gorgeous and poignant songs of all time.
Right that's enough rambling from me.
    All the best.

  • What a star you are! Great to see a perfomance of what is a very funny (ha ha) song. Never knew it was a single (best kept secret).

Morrissey you look like the last of the international rock stars.

  • The b-sides were indeed 'lost' gems, 'Lost' is just lovely, beautiful.....the images he evokes in the lrics are stunning, reminiscent of the 'Everday Is Like Sunday' theme. 'The Edges Are No Longer Parallel' is just as strong, christ some bands would die for these as A-sides! Everybody is so critical of Moz because of his own high standards, he lapses like every artist does, how many amazing songs has he written....hundreds!! yet people in general, like non Moz fans always seem to remember the weaker ones, hence dis-regard the great stuff!!!

    such a shame........

    im still living, just.

ive just watched mozz el 'roys keen.'
im in the process of preparing an vpeg for u all to see.
overall it was a sturdy set, very different to the album version , mozz looking a bit cheezed off and his space on stage he had to move around was very limited.
hopefully it will be ready for u guys in the ole us of a by about monday/tuesday but shankly and co will probably beat me to it.......................
they must have filmed it thinking right mozz will hit top 20 / 30 and the set will be ready to go next week.
mozz must of been gutted when it failed at no.42.
it probably sold between 5 - 8 thousand copies.
    well, i got mine.

  • It was a great performance, surprisingly serious for a "comedy" song. It came across much better than the studio version, I think, much less throwaway... darker and more mysterious...

  • The performance of 'Roy's Keen' I think shows that the chap still is very shy. It must have been awkward for him performing in front of an audience that didn't want to rip his clothes off for a change. And faced with a quite indifferent audience he looked quite shy. Next time he does ToTP (oh please, oh please say it'll be so) he'll have to let everyone at Morrissey-solo know when and where it's going to be recorded and we'll 'do' a 'Craig Kilbourn'. Like someone else here I'd have hoped for much more hand waving, chest clutching and exasperated looks to the heavens. Anyway he didn't have much stage space did he? ToTP has people on to perform their old hits now don't they? and special guest appearances and the like. Maybe they'll have Morrissey in one day. Tingle

  • Where was the bit that goes 'Don't say you'll hold it steady then you let it go?' Thatis clearly the best bit of this song, which is also Moz's 2nd best single.
