The Statement from Boz regarding the Sanctuary rumor has been on the front page of this site since Jan. 23. Can the NME be that out of it?

This is probably the NME recycling the old rumour but here's the article in full anyway, from the current issue dated 1 Feb 2003

Moz takes Sanctuary in new record deal

Morrissey has signed a record deal with Sanctuary Music - home to Megadeth, Ministry and Black Sabbath!

The music group has been in negotiations with the singer for a year, and according to reports in the French music press, the deal was confirmed at the MIDEM music conference in Cannes last week.

No one at Sanctuary was available to speak to NME at the time of going to press.

Morrissey played his first UK shows for almost three years in 2002 and the Morrissey/Smiths revival has been gaining pace, with The Smiths voted the greatest band in last year's top 50 artists poll, and current favourites include Interpol, Ryan Adams and The Libertines declaring themselves devotees.

  • how hard did they try to call anyone? maybe they should try calling during business hours.

or if they DID try to call someone, and were given the runaround, why is Sanctuary milking it for its worth? is this the most publicity their label has ever received and they would otherwise not receive any phone calls from the press if they were strictly reliant on megadeth to churn any publicity?

    I scare dead people.
  • Now... interesting. The chap who works at the record shop in my town said that the Sanctuary Rep who visited last week told him that Morrissey HAD indeed signed to the label, and an album was expected in the summer.

The NME are likely to have been informed by the label itself, rather than just picking up rumours.

Could it be Boz is wrong? You just never know with Morrissey!

  • Does anyone else want to scream and rip out their hair? Or is everyone so numb to this that there's no feeling left?

I find myself somewhere between the two.

    Stop the madness, please.

  • Well, I have a feeling that it's true and that they did sign him. I e-mailed the record company and they said that they cannot comment at this time. I only wish that I saved that e-mail. But it's better than "No Record Deal!" Right?

  • I think NME would like to see Morrissey signed only to take credit for it -- you know how they proclaimed the Smiths best band of the eighties.

The reporters at the NME are overworked -- not that that is an excuse and they tend not to do their homework when it comes to headline stories

All we can really do is say how good of a site this is to have infromation a leading newspaper does not!

  • How I wish Boz is wrong wrong wrong...

So here's a scenario. Morrissey is a stand alone. Does he need Boz, Alain, Gary, Tom, Bruce, Mike or John to sign a record deal ? The answer is obviously "no". Does he have to tell them about each and every move he makes ? Same answer. The guy's become legendary for disappearing for weeks over the years and ever since the Smiths, I don't think Boz is much aware of what Morrissey does. Morrissey also became famous more recently for being someone who likes money. So had he sign some 5 M£ contract with Sanctuary, would he tell the press or the band ? That's HIS dough someone might want to syphon ;-)He might be afraid of lawsuits again. Once again, seek the answer above.

So he obviously might have signed without telling the band.

Sorry Boz, we'd love you to be wrong.
