Les Inrockuptibles (French magazine) announced that Sanctuary has confirmed the information at the MIDEM in Cannes ( France).

Morrissey has finally signed a contract with Sanctuary for a "LONG TERM" collaboration.

  • They being Morrissey's preferred voice to the French public during his early '90s prominence. I would hold much more stock in them reporting this than the News of the World.

Of course, there are still details missing. Guess we'll see if one of Morrissey's payroll sends David a message to retract in the next few days!

Could any of our French friends here enlighten us as to what the MIDEM is? An industry showcase?

    Cheers,

    Jamie

  • Hmm (Score:2, Insightful)

It does seem strange that this should be publicised through a stand at a music fair - by the people who happened to represent Sanctuary at the fair (unlikely to be top people) to French music journalists - who interestingly do not seem to recognize their scoop (or this would at least have been given its own article).

After some consideration, I think - though I could be wrong - that this is just an extension of the usual rumour (which will probably turn out to be true one day).

The only thing that really suggests otherwise is that David has chosen to bring it here. Why bother bringing up the same rumour yet another time?

  • why not announce it this way?? I cant see it being announced at a dull press conference... How about a double page spread in NME as a joke?? Sorry, below the belt.

BUT... should this turn out to be true and the songs are recorded... we could have a shiny new Moz album on uor hands as early as... what?? June?

And remember June is Glastonbury and the last night Michael Eavis always has an older act on as opposed to modern chart acts. Last year Rod Stewart, in 2000 it was Bowie. Who's to say it couldn't happen?

  • It's about the deal Morrissey and Sanctuary
made about releasing a live dvd/video of his
last tour, and the rights to release another
    best of album.

A company usually makes a deal with an artist
of band for making 1/2/3 or whatever amount of
    album[s] for $$$$$$$$$, and that is what I didn't
    read.

Still x my fingers that I'm wrong and he finally
    can release new songs/an album

  • I want to believe this, but I'm burned out and rather dismal. The same tired rumor just sailed across the English Channel and set up shop in France. I don't believe it. Morrissey will get a deal when he wants one, and when he tires of playing the victim card - he remains his own worst enemy. But perhaps this rumor is true, and Morrissey has gotten all possible mileage out of the "prophet without honor in his own land (industry?)" thing. Then he'll be ready to go, as will I. I scold because I care.

  • A lot of us have gone to a Moz show just for it to be cancelled last minute. Now I don't believe a show will actually happen until he comes out on the stage. I'll believe the record deal is true when I'm holding the record in my hands. Doesn't mean I'm not excited though.

  • Y'know all the record deal stuff seems to be missing out one guy. Doesn't Steve Lillywhite run some UK label nowerdays? Does anyone know why he isn't interested in Morrissey? Or have they had a well publisised falling out I just haven't heard off? Anyway - Yeah! if its true and Damn! if its not.

  • FWIW, in the discussion area attached to the Les Inrocks article [lesinrocks.com] someone called STONEY has posted a denial of the "Sanctuary announce Morrissey signing" rumour:

"Contrairement à ce qu'écrit David GLASER, MORRISSEY n'a aucun contrat avec SANTUARY RECORDS ni avec aucun autre label pour son prochain album..."

    My translation:
"Contrary to what David Glaser (author of the original Les Inrocks story) has written Morrissey doesn't have any contract with Sanctuary Records nor with any other label for his next album."

I've no idea if this is any more reliable than the original rumour tho' ?
