The depressing tag continues, and Morrissey fans are described as social outcasts!!!

Down but not out - Colorado Springs Gazette (Aug. 28, 2002)

Morrissey, that old master of mope, now a beloved cult figure
By Bill Reed The Gazette

Excerpt:

Steven Patrick Morrissey never has done anything halfway. So it is only fitting that his fall from grace has been nothing short of spectacular.

Ten years ago Morrissey sold out the Hollywood Bowl in 22 minutes - eclipsing a mark held by the Beatles. Next week he plays the Colorado Music Hall.
In the United States, Moz has been a more shadowy figure. His gloriously effeminate manner, his avowed celibacy, and an affection for Oscar Wilde made him a darkly charismatic figure for gay teens and other social outcasts - the smart, sensitive types who couldn't head bang to heavy metal or pompom to bubbly pop.

He was speaking directly to them, and they could stay cloistered in their dark bedrooms and know that someone, somewhere understood.

  • "...he attracted devoted live crowds, and he officially joined the mainstream with 1994's MTV-fueled hit "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" - a goofy video with Morrissey writhing around in the desert like Faith Hill..."

Isn't that the "November Spawned a Monster" video? Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but Morrissey was running around trying to break lightbulbs in "The More You Ignore Me..." video. I don't understand how people like this write articles like these and continue to get paid. Hey, how about doing some research? Nah, I'll just wing it. No one will notice.

  • Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha... this Bill Reed fool is writing out of his ASS.
I'm really just Some Totally Random Moz Fan
  • Anyone who begins an article by describing Moss's audience as "gay teens" knows nothing of which he writes, neither the artist nor the audience. I read no further than that trite comment. When will critics learn that intelligent and aesthetically conscious people listen to Morrissey, not gay or straight or hypersensitive people? If a majority of Moz fans are in some way disaffected it is because we live in a world that rewards ignorance, where money, rather than integrity, insight or creativity not to mention talent, governs which art reaches the masses.

  • I don't mind negative articles, but I least expect them to be decently researched. Let's see, besides the video blunder, the Smtihs didn't inspire the Cure or Depeche who were around much earlier, the British public didn't ignore his solo stuff and the NME named the most influential band on the magazine, which is different than most influential band. I didn't read any further, because this guy obviously has his head up his ass.

  • I just don't know where to start! I'm not going to bother, he's so not worth it so I'll keep it succinct: F*CK YOU YOU YANK WANKER!

    Goodnight and thank you.

    no longer drowning...
  • Gay teens? sensitive closet kids? What the heck is this guy talking about? I played football and had tons of sex with my girlfriend, and we were huge Smiths/Morrissey fans. We even brought "How soon is Now?" to play at the prom.

  • Back from his Smiths days "I Thought that if I didn't mention the word her or him, then that I was speaking for everyone". This journalist should hand-in his/her press-pass which they are obviously not qualified to keep. Effeminate? King of mope? Fall from grace? Firstly, the era of arena rock died a long time ago along with heavy metal. NOBODY wants seat 273D in the nosebleed section. OK, U2 still do it, but they also make it an experience for (almost) all the senses. You would have to pay me to see Moz play the Hollywood bowl or Wembley stadium. Trust me, I have the bootlegs and they sound horrible. Mope: Everyone who's been inspired or cheered-up by a Moz or Smiths song raise your hand......there!! Effeminate: What is that? To speak politely, softly. To wear beads? To idolize other men? I've got pictures of Moz, Anthony Perkins & Jerry Orbach in my studio....This Journalist (perhaps didn't) lie, but failed to conduct appropriate research and talk to fans who, after 20 years, still listen to Hand in Glove as if it were the first time.
