Still Ill - Phoenix New Times, Aug. 9
By Johnathan Bond
Forever Maladjusted, Morrissey hauls his musical baggage out on tour

Excerpt:

The man who is perhaps the most unlikely pop star of our time is returning to Phoenix. Morrissey — son of librarians, celibate singer of sexual songs, violent vegetarian, bundle of endless contradiction and controversy — graces Celebrity Theatre with his presence on Friday, August 9.

The question is: Why? The former vocalist of the Smiths has no new album, no new retrospective, and is backed by no sudden resurgence of the music of the Smiths. He has been a solo artist much longer than he was a Smith anyway, beginning with Viva Hate way back in 1988. His biggest-selling record in America was 1994's Vauxhall and I, which spawned the self-parodying hit single "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get." His career appears to have been in a steady decline since then.

I hope thats not the case, I'm quite fond of the musical partners he has now (Boz & Alain) & has'nt got bored with them. They have this way of making musical sense with the choice of notes and crap that they play, and from a guitarist point of view, I think they're awesome...but Morrissey'
lyrics don't have the same emotional effect that they used to have on me since VAUXHAL & I...and I'm waiting and hoping that his new material will make me feel like it once did before.

  • Whilst I agree Vauxhall and I is Mozza's best album I think all the others are very good. I discovered the great man at the tender age of 47 nearly 3 years ago at the City Hall, Salisbury, England. I think he writes the best pop songs ever. Quite how this dickhead can describe this poet of our times as maladjusted I cannot begin to think.
Southpaw Grammar was a truly great album which shows the development of Steven. Anyone who wants a string of samey albums should try Oasis who only made 2 good albums and Phil Collins....
