Channel Four here in the UK have an interview with Johnny Marr on their Teletext service. On the Warners Best Of: "I'm aghast at the contempt they've shown to us and the fans" (he says he had been thinking about putting together a DVD with unseen Smiths footage). On Morrissey:

Q: Morrissey has a new solo album due ...
A: It sounds rude but I'm not really interested. If someone played it to me, I wouldn't go: "turn that off". But, going from Morrissey's albums to date, I can't see how I'd like it. Sorry.

And he should just shut up already about the Very best of. Any reasonable person can see its not as horrible as he makes it out to be.

        • If Morrissey hand-picked that photo, I'd find a way to ask him to get his head examined. I am being honest. I would have a problem with it. It's ugly, and it doesn't have the romantic and meaningful feel to it. There's a certain feeling you get when you look at Smiths album covers. Something that is working class, tragic and haunting.

I didn't mean to insult you, not really. I just think the whole thing about Johnny Marr being useless is insulting. I see your point, but I guess instead of thinking about myself and the song selection (because I have all of them anyway), I was thinking more about how it affected Morrissey and Marr. I mean, The Smiths meant everything to them...And for something like this to be released without the approval of the band, and on top of them not only disapproving it, but are terribly disturbed by it, well it affects me to a degree as well.

If you had been a part of some special band for a long time, and you spent quite a lot of time picking out what you were going to put on the front of an lp (which was somewhat of a special tradion in your band),and years later, after you've split, some company comes a long and releases a "very best of" where they've screwed up everything...especially song titles and the album cover...Wouldn't you find that a bit hard to deal with? Can't you see what they are saying, or how they feel about it?

Okay, so maybe this isn't something that you care for in any way, shape, or form. Maybe for you it's all about the music and you really don't have any kind of connection with the people who made up The Smiths, but for me I can see why Morrissey and Marr are disgusted with it, and how they could feel somewhat violated.

That's just my opinion, which means absolutetly nothing to anyone, but me.

  • Well, Marr is certainly qualified to render an opinion about his taste for Morrissey's music. Who isn't, after, qualified to render a personal opinion? If he doesn't care for Morrisey's music, he doesn't care for it. It should come as little surprise that Marr has been interested in different musical forms since the late '80s, and that Morrissey's band and cowriters do not supply the sort of music for which he most likely cares.

He cannot, however, complain about Morrisey's prolific output without appearing hypocritical.

When the subject of Electronic came up again in '94, a journalist suggested that everyone has the right to make the occasional Italian disco record. Moz responded, "I fail to so why [anyone] would."

So kids, there's a *very simple* reason these two men will not work together: they have widely differing tastes.

  • remember, Morrissey feels the need to prove himself. criticism feeds his neurosis.

the break w/ Marr damaged Morrissey not only professionally but psychologically as well.

Marr's continuous snubbing gives Morrissey ample provocation to produce something substanial.

and Marr isn't the enemy here. Morrissey needs to step up the quality of his work. he's capable of making a massive comeback, at least a respectable one.

    don't ever question that.

when The Cure called it quits, Robert Smith acknowledged "Bloodflowers" had to be their best effort in years. that he had to give the fans what they demanded.

although i often wonder if Morrissey is interested in having a career, i'm certain he would want the same. he can't leave us with "Maladjusted" or yet another "Best of". that's not his style.

he won't leave us with a whimper...

  • He couldn't wait to get that one in could he? Didn't he send Morrissey a note saying he liked 'Playboys' years ago but then Morrissey obviously didn't return the compliment with Electronic. Is JM still bitter? Morrissey records are not a million miles away from Smiths records surely...

  • johnny marr seems like a terribly dull person, but i would never call him bitter, as one person here has. his work with electronic has been varied, but increasingly interesting over the course of their three albums...of course that's just an opinion.

morrissey's output has been only slightly more interesting, and his last few efforts haven't staggered me (or most other people judging from sales and critical reaction).

i don't know why people feel the need to create some contest or conflict between them. they don't like each other. they have different musical interests. people change. move on.

  • Up until Southpaw, Moz's solo albums were undeniably great while Johnny's solo career has been in the obscure Electronic and as a studio sideman. It's natural that Johnny would be a little jealous. If Morrissey came out with a new record tomorrow, I have a hard time believing Johnny wouldn't check it out.

  • Well, if you look at everything Marr has done since The Smiths, it has been very different from their sound, while Moz still has a little of the sound left in him. It isn't a wonder why Marr does not dig Moz's stuff.

What has Marr done lately? Not a whole lot and I will bet that it is not going to be earth shattering. Just because he was great once does not mean he will always produce great things. Have you read the reviews for the new Michael Jackson disc, or heard his last albums? No good. Not that he is a favorite of mine but at one time he was a genius.

People lose their creativity to a degree. Look at Maladjusted. It is a pretty weak effort, but Moz is still great in my mind.

  • ENOUGH JOHNNY BASHING ALREADY!!!!! Geez - give it a rest.

Why is everybody so against Johnny? What the hell has he done? I mean, is it just because Morrissey and Johnny don't get along these days? Some of you have said some of the most horrible things about Morrissey, and then turn around and say horrible things about Johnny, so whose side are you all on??

There must be some sort of combination thing going on here. Those who support Johnny because they're Smiths fans and won't get past the fact that the Smiths do not exist anymore. Those who Support Morrissey alone because of what the hell ever reason they have, and those, like me, who care for the both...it's got to be, or else people just come here to slag them off because they have nothing else to do.

(oh, yeah, and Johnny, if you read this - Happy Birthday!)
