The Smiths Singles Box - Rhino.co.uk

Rhino UK are proud to present “Singles Box”: a clamshell card box containing the first ten UK-issued singles in their original picture sleeves. What makes this particularly special is the two singles which are exclusive to this box set: These unique inclusions are the projected fourth single - “Still Ill” (which was pressed only as DJ promo “A” label) but was ultimately passed over and replaced by “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” along side the Dutch release of “The Headmaster Ritual” housed in it’s black & white “cowboy” sleeve – the rarest commercially issued Smiths’ single in any territory.

The box is completed with four contemporary badges, a poster featuring the single artworks as well as an authentication certificate that contains a unique redemption code for mp3 downloads of the tracks.

An absolute must have item for Smiths‘ fans, and limited to 10,000 copies only. All singles utilise the original production masters from the period.

The front cover image of the box was personally chosen by Morrissey. It features Joel Fabiani from the 1969 TV series "Department S", starring Peter Wyndgarde, Joel Fabiani and Rosemary Nicols.

Out now and available at Virgin Megastores.

  • I hate the cover. Oh, and please, no tired "tacky badge" comments.

  • No wonder Joel Fabiani is leaning on the car for support,I imagine the sheer weight of his enormous tool is dragging him over.

  • Love the idea of the Smiths box set but no thanks...

Why would I buy a box of 7" vinyl singles? Am I going to play them? No.

To look at? No. Got enough stuff already collecting dust.

  • does anyone know what the "Still Ill" sleeve looks like? will it be the same "Hand In Glove" image used in the German release from 1984?

No, it's not the German image. The sleeve itself is a plain white card sleeve with a centre cut-out, and the label on the vinyl is cream with a large "A" filling the whole label. The same artwork design is used for the promo CD which came with the first 100 copies of the boxset (which contains This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and Panic).

All in all, it's a nice set which I'm very happy happy to have. What a lot of negativity!

  • I simply do not get it. I thought this site was for fans of Morrissey and the Smiths. All I ever see on this horrible site is nothing but negativity about him. David T, I think it's time to retire this thing. I think it's ruining Morrissey, more than promoting him. If you don't like Morrissey, why come here?

  • Wonderful sound, cute badges, and attractive presentation.

Being Canadian, I feel lucky it arrived right on the date of its release.

  • The vinyl purists are always silly, but this set seems appropriate.

Anyway, it's obvious that the cover was chosen for the hard-on alone. It rivals the pencil that Alain had in his pocket during the Joe Slee shoot.

Morrissey has completed his transformation from cloistered old woman, to dirty old man.

  • about the title and promo around the whole thing. It's called "The Smiths singles box" - but then they should have added "1" because it's only the first 10 singles (and 2 rare ones).

I'm looking forward to the other singles box as well, hoping there's 10 + 2 rarities again (let's hope there's Sweet & tender hooligan, and HSIN reissue).

  • ...there are a couple of surprisingly basic printing errors on this release. On the insert giving details of the release dates etc, 'Hand in Glove' is listed with the release details of 'This Charming Man'- i.e. it states that it was released in November 1983 and achieved a chart position of 25. The details are correctly repeated under the following entry for This Charming Man. Also, it is stated on the label for 'That Joke...' that it is from the Rough Trade album 'Hatful of Hollow'. The original release gave 'Meat is Murder', so how Rhino have transposed the name of the wrong album instead of the correct one is a little difficult to work out. A simple proof-read would have picked these up, surely, just a bit of extra care. Otherwise, it's a well enough presented box, but it's also let down a little by the barcodes on the back of each sleeve and the slight lack of quality of the front sleeve photogaphy on each one- each looks like it's been taken from a colour photocopy of the original sleeve, or even a photocopy of a photocopy. With computers, there should be no excuses these days for any loss of quality. Given that they've also replicated the messages on the run-out grooves, it might also have been nice to replicate the 'pop-out' centres, where appropriate (all of these ones have solid centres), the original Portland Street address sleeves for the first two releases, the 'Capitol Radio' style label for This Charming Man etc, blah blah....

Okay, Morrissey chose the box cover photo, but personally I feel that a monochrome shot might have been a bit more striking, and more in keeping with the design of the original releases. It's a bit, well, colourful? A trivial point, admittedly.

I can only guess that there might be a second set in the offing, as there is no logical reason I can think of as to why they would have stopped at 'Bigmouth'. The German release of 'Barbarism...' with its unique sleeve, pre-dating 3 of the releases in this box, might have been a more obvious choice for inclusion, and could have replaced 'Bigmouth', leaving that one, the remaining UK singles, one of the foreign releases of 'Stop Me...', and maybe the Warners re-releases of 'How Soon...' and 'There is a Light...' for inclusion on a subsequent set. 'Sweet and Tender Hooligan' wouldn't fall into this category, as it didn't get a 7" release.

Not too serious, this post, just food for thought...I do not want to be shot down in flames by the more negative posters on this site who may already think that this box-set is either a waste of time, or a rip-off, or both...I'm a serious collector, and enjoy acquiring these kind of things!

  • Do you people, “fans” even listen to these – or -- do you - just look at the covers and sleeves? You buy them to look at things. It’s unbelievable. This makes sense to me. You know … Do you put all of the specifications under a microscope …
I mean, it seems as if you don’t even listen to the words. Because you are not wired like that. Keep it together and quit being influenced by the “Enemy”.
Material gifts come naturally to Morrissey – but if that someone has rather more sincere traits, maybe they are right for you. Let’s see Morrissey for the beautiful person that he truly is. I already have for approximately ten years. Integrity is very important. The “Enemy” has a plan. Morrissey is right. The “Enemy” orchestrated this.
I support Morrissey. It’s Morrissey that I love. I can get behind that.
