I bought it today and the remastering DOES sound good!

The sound is airier, clearer, stronger & better.

Well worth getting. Nice photos too - especially inside the 2-CD edition.

Go for it if you want it but was the remastering really necessary? Plus there's no new tracks because as Noel G said they never did anything crap. God love him :)

For Moz's pleasure, I can report that Virgin Megastore in Hollywood kept this under wraps and did not advertise the release on their board of such last night. Nary a Moz/Smiths fan in sight at all, and working so much overtime lately, I was sure I'd come across something about Morrissey and Marr working together on this and that it was okay to pluck it. After all, Johnny has been really involved...

Risking Moz's displeasure, I can say this collection is beautifully done, tributing the music (including UK chart placements), the photographers, the producers, and additional people (many of) whose names fans can recognize. The fact that at least two of those thanked have sadly passed on (Kirsty MacColl, John Peel) speaks to the importance that this was done now. Rhino typically does a good job with their collections (and nice to see Sire again) but it was even better Johnny took the reins and oversaw the production. He put a lot of his heart, soul and sweat into The Smiths so it's best that this one be done right. I can understand Moz not being able to stand being part of it. Joyce could not be whited out of every photo (and the royalty situation, well, wouldn't it be nice if Joyce would just make this his last application for $Moz and just shove off forevermore). But if M wants to know from arms distance how it turned out, it captures the good times, the songs, solidly. His voice shines beautifully (namely Meat is Murder live and Stretch Out and Wait, imho). Thirty, fifty years later, who knows where we'll all be. But some 13 year-old in 2040 will find this somehow in his granduncle or aunt's collection and he won't ever be able to put it down. Just as we have never.

The slapdash release of Morrissey live at the Hollywood Bowl is done by Warner without any consultation to me whatsoever, and is in breach of their terms as laid out by themselves in an agreement made for the film between Warner and my ex-manager. Being Warner, predictably the sleeve art is appalling. It is the work of cash-hounds, and I urge people NOT to buy it. I am not signed to Warner, and no royalties from this dvd will come to me. Then there are scumbags like robiskeen slithering on this site saying Kate uses drugs, takes meth, is insane and his posts stay up untouched
I see other posters bashing Morrissey in the most vile and destructive manner and they stay up unmoderated. There’s even some insane person writing about a Gay Satan and other insanity’s and his posts stay unmoderated.
No wonder Morrissey calls this SoLow and detests it. People like Kate who support Morrissey and defend his points of view are censored for expressing her opinion on Morrissey’s sworn enemy and nightmare by his own admission. And “people” like this robiskeen who abuse others, in this case Kate, by constantly making references to her being insane and on drugs, more specifically meth, which at a minimum deserves to be censored down as abusive and moreover constitutes harassment.
This site continues to be a disgrace as Morrissey supporters are harassed and treated like they are the abusers of this site while those who harass Morrissey in the most abusive terms as well as harass other posters with statements about drug use and insanity are left alone.
The only surprise I suppose is they are not moderated up to a 2 but that I guess assumes those who are moderating can count beyond 1.

Have been a Smiths/Moz fan for about 5 yrs now and was quite looking forward to this release and had high hopes for the sound quality. Packaging was well done, imo, and the remastering is excellent (glad for Marr's involvement). Some of the songs sparkle more than others... actually, I was rather dissapointed off the bat with 'Hand In Glove', but was BLOWN AWAY by the clarity and crispness and depth of 'Ask'... to me worth the package. Have only listened to the 2-disc set a few times through now, so expect to hear other treasures as time goes on.

I think this is an important chapter in The Smiths history and (for right or wrong) will likely be a starting point for many new fans into the future.
