With the guile, the ambition, the zeal he feels, this is Morrissey's time to have a #1 Single in the UK Charts. For someone as obsessed and knowledgeable about chart placing(s) as Morrissey, I think it would mean a lot to him to have the #1 song in the land (he has had #1 Solo albums in "Viva Hate" & "Vauxhall & I").
#1 singles have historical significance, they are duly noted, debated, archived, and love them or loathe them, those #1 songs represent the most popular / dominant moods of an era. Let's buck today's trend of mostly crap songs rising to zenith heights for just one week and thrust (I can hear the jokes now) our favourite singer to the top of the UK singles chart. All we have to do is buy the single in the first week and hope that nothing by Keane is released!!
As for the song itself, "You Have Killed Me" is a grower, a safe choice, but catchy enough to make it to the top spot. After all we're talking about an artist that should have a bevy of #1 singles to his credit by now…so Morrissey's persona and our devotion combined with the song should be enough for a #1 hit.
And for those of us in the USA, there's always the Billboard "Modern Rock Charts" where Moz has done quite well.
Seize the day!!
Morrissey's Solo top ten UK hits to date:
Suedehead (#5)
Everyday is Like Sunday (#9)
The Last of The Famous International Playboys (#6)
Interesting Drug (#9)
The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get (#8)
Irish Blood English Heart (#3)
First of The Gang to Die (#6)
Let Me Kiss You (#8)
I Have Forgiven Jesus (#10)
