In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, the cover article is a feature documenting the '500 greatest albums of all time'. There's not a single Morrissey solo album in the list, but the Smiths make four appearances:-

#216 - 'The Queen Is Dead'
#295 - 'Meat Is Murder'
#365 - 'Louder Than Bombs'
#481 - 'The Smiths'

You can check out the details on the Rolling Stone magazine website, here.

...pg.108 (Dec. print issue of Rolling Stone) states:

"Batting Averages, acts with the highest percentage of their total catalogs in the Rolling Stone 500."

#1) THE SMITHS (4 of 5 albums), .800
#2) The Beatles

pg.108 also has a picture of The Smiths too

  • We all know these rankings are in the ears of the beholder but how a "various artist compilation" or a "best of" record makes any of these greatest lists of all time I really don't understand.

My fitty cent on the matter.

  • since rolling stone included the compilation, Louder Than Bombs, in their list it'd be more like 4/7 if you include Hatful Of Hollow and The World Won't Listen [.571]. if you wanna disregard the compilations altogether then i guess you'd get 3/4 [.750] but yure still a bit short of your stat of .800. still beats the beats thebeatles though at 9/17 [.529], of course 7 of those 9 fall in the top 100. that list is garbage anyway.

  • i'm curious if this list only includes titles available on rhino.

i can't imagine an album like "Moving Pictures" by Rush not being on this list but Rhino doesn't sell that record.

    Hmmm.

  • 4 out of their 6 albums (if you include The World Won't Listen since they do Louder Than Bombs) isn't bad... I wonder they think is wrong with Strangeways... besides it being the last...

The Smiths could have had double, nah, triple the releases they did... Releasing an album every two years, they could have had something close to 20 albums. Then we could just sit back & wait for the red and blue CD case re-releases that we'd all buy like the Beatles have.

  • something close to 20 albums is they lasted something close to 30-40 years. how many bands do that? thesmiths didnt even last 10.

  • I don't know about Meat is Murder being better than Strangeways. Meat is Murder is my least favorite album...although that's impossible to say, because all the albums are amazing. They should have put all five on, at least.

  • That list is pathetic.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the greatest album of all time?

I guess that's why Jessica Simpson and that little spiked haired wuss who placed 2nd on American Idol have been on the cover of the rag 2 of the last few issues.

David T., here is a new mandate: Don't put anything that has to do with Rolling Stone magazine on this website any more.

Just read the RS list and get ready to shake your head in utter dismay at how dead wrong they are.

Are there any Belle & Sebastian or Cure or Trashcan Sinatras albums on the list?

I am a pretty fair and positive person, but this continued pandering to Sgt. Pepp. and Pet Sounds serves...what point? (Not to say those aren't great albums, but they're not even in the Top 50 in my opinion.)

And then, of course, Nevermind in the Top 20.

It is officially time for a musical revolution...

We all want to change the world...

  • I was scrolling through the list, searching to see where they placed The Smiths. As soon as I saw Dre Dre, NWA and other non-musical, no talent ass clowns I decided it was time to put my browser to bed. I'm Surprised Michael Bolton did not end up in the top ten. Who compiled this list-Kurt Loder!!

  • This, my fellow Morrissey/Smiths fans, is a forum.
A place where we can express our feelings about certain topics.
This topic regards Rolling Stone's "list of the top 500 albums of all time."

Many of you disagree. Well, then if you disagree, then so be it. I'm not pissed.
I, for one, am please pleased with the magazine's decision to place The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at the #1 spot, as well as Revolver at #3, Rubber Soul at #5, White Album at #10, Abbey Road at #14, Please Please Me at #39, and Let It Be at #86!

Then again, there is no other band in history that has brought more people together than the music of the Beatles. Everyone on Earth has heard of them. I don't think any other band has ever had a bigger fanbase than the four lads from Liverpool. Both my parents are from Mexico, and they've been listening to them since 1964 (in Mexico they are bleeding HUGE) and even to this day, are still [lifelong] fans.
Hell, I cried when I heard about George Harrison's death. I literally grew up with their music, and I've liked them alot longer than Morrissey and the Smiths ...but that doesn't mean that I don't love Moz and the boys. I do, but, really, ask anyone (yes, even here in LA!) to name a Smiths or Moz song other How Soon Is Now? or Everyday Is Like Sunday, and most of the bleeding time you don't get that response you want to hear.
Then ask the same person to name a Beatles tune and they will ask you 'from which album?'

So, in closing, I know I am not alone.
There are those who agree with me, those will disagree with me, and those who will tell me to 'shut the fuck up about the beatles'.

    I've said my peace.

    Goodnite from Duarte.

  • Sorry ladies and gentleman, don't have the time to think out a top 20.

    Top 5 would be;

    "Doolittle" Pixies
    "What's Going On" Marvin Gaye
    "The Bends" Radiohead
    "Vauxhall and I" Morrissey
    "Revolver" Beatles

  • The whole thing was diabolical. They ranked Jackson Browne over the s/t Smiths LP. Green Day over Jeff Buckley. Moby over Depeche Mode Violator.

I hold no merit to that list other than a motive to sell issues. Rolling Stone are a bunch of hippies that were given jobs and became yuppies. I'll bet they haven't listened to half the records they reviewed.

  • Wow, all top 100 albums are by (mostly white) male rockers. Imagine that. What a stupid magazine. It covers mostly terrible pop, that which is spit out to us wrapped in plastic with shiny "featuring these hits" labels, but acts as if it is some important historical rag on rock and roll. Seriously, while I'm impressed at some of their choices, it's the same bloody thing - The Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, blah blah... That the Smiths are on there is cool, but of course they're stuck in the top 300 with some of the weirder exceptions to the list. Otherwise the top 100 are nearly all the same thing...
